What Causes An Egg Allergy Resource in Questions
Egg Allergy questions? I am having my daughter's 5th bday party next wknd and she just informed me that one of her friends is allergic to eggs. I would have contacted the mother of the child, but the family is on vacation until the day before the party. My questions: People who are allergic to eggs: is it the yolk or the white or the whole egg that causes the allergy? I think I may need to get an eggless cake & eggless cookies. Can they eat mayo? Are they not able to eat any egg products (like egg pasta or egg noodles)? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

willa replied: "there are eggs in mayo, and i would assume she/he wouldn't be able to have egg pastas. you should call the parents and get the specifics just to be safe. here's a recipe for an eggless cake. EGGLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE 1 1/2 c. flour 1 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. soda 3 tbsp. cocoa 6 tbsp. oil 1 tbsp. vinegar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. cold water Sift together flour, sugar, salt, soda and cocoa. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into 8"x8" pan. Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes."

Peggy L replied: "Really depends on the person. My son was allergic to eggs and could not eat scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, etc. but the little bit he got in a slice of cake or cookie didn't bother him. He was allergic to several other things - tomato sauce for instance. When he went to pizza parties, I just took him a hamburger or something he could eat so it wasn't a problem. This little girl's mother is probably used to dealing with this."

josu63 replied: "Egg allergy means to all parts of the egg and all egg products. You may want to check the local health food store (or section of the grocery store) to see if there are any egg free cake mixes out there. Also watch frostings because some will list meringue powder as an ingredient and that is just powdered egg whites. If you use the following recipe - just dust the cake with powdered sugar. If you find a happy birthday stencil at a craft store - place that on the cake first and then sprinkle on the sugar. And it sticks best on a slightly warm but almost cool cake! Also check out cooks.com - I found this recipe there: QUICK CHOCOLATE EGGLESS CAKE 1-1/2 cup flour 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 cup cold water 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp vinegar Preheat oven to 375F. Spray a small baking pan (8x12) with vegetable spray or Baker's Joy. Combine dry ingredients directly in the pan. Mix all the wet ingredients In a small bowl, combine remaining ingredients leaving out the vinegar until the final step. Combine wet and dry ingredients, stirring together in pan until well combined. Stir in the vinegar rapidly and immediately place pan into preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 min. Optional: You can stir in 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips just before baking to make a richer cake with melted chocolate bits or swirls."

Mark B replied: "If they are allergic to eggs they can not have anything to do with eggs. There are recipes for eggless cakes online that are very easy to make. More than likely you will find the friend will not eat anything if they are that allergic no matter what you make or get. It would be a nice to have something they could eat, I just wouldn't go over board. Mark Piece of Cake Bakery Inc. Black Truffle Chocolatiers Inc."

MikeL replied: "No No NO you continue to contact her mother or stop her at the door to inform her you use eggs. why are you altering your life for one individual WHO is responsible for her health problems (well her parents) It is the Yolk mayo NO see you don't need to know all that junk it becomes a nightmare"

lilbitsanantonio replied: "If you don't want to make a cake from scratch, Cherry Brook Kitchen has an eggless cake mix in chocolate and yellow. It tastes really good. I think all you need to add is water. My great niece is allergic to eggs (any and all parts)and had this for her birthday. Their products are available in some Targets (on their website you input your zip code to find out where it is available in your area)or can be ordered from their website"

Eve G replied: "Again it depends. I was allergic to eggs, and I couldn't eat the Whites--b/c most allergies are related to "proteins." However, it is possible it is to the whole egg. If the allergy is severe I would avoid things like egg pasta and cakes w/eggs in the them--also just have mustard--mayo is bad."

rosa g replied: "The allergy in the eggs is more likely the allergy to the mercury in the eggs. It is the allergy of the WHOLE egg. Eggless cookie you can make her one try shortbread cookies those don't have eggs in them. Make her a burger she'll be alright! Don't alter your party for one kid."

asimina replied: "----------- "

j b replied: "nothing with eggs would be good for your daughter's friend.... make separate cupcakes using applesauce instead of eggs... no cheese either.....any product by amy's is good......obtain at your local health food store.....look for mini pizzas, etc...you would be surprised........ children who have egg allergies are more informed about what they can and cannot eat... ask your daughter what her friend brings for lunch....... enjoy the party...."

jaani113 replied: "i would provide eggless for the little girl....but not for the rest of the party goers, i am surprised that the parents did not inform you. my older son was allergic to eggs, but we only found out when he did allergy testing, but he continued to eat eggs, but it was the egg white he was allergic to. btw, depending on how severe the allergy, she cant have any eggs or anything with eggs in it...i would call them on the day of the party to verify."

Does anyone know the cure for egg allergy? Specifically, egg white? I was not allergic to eggs, until the age of 10. But soon after that, I developed this allergy and it causes pain in the stomach until it is discarded out of the system. I can safely eat boiled egg yolk though, but not the egg white. Any clues?

carole0103 replied: "I am not sure there are cures for allergies. I do know that a good Allergist can treat a patient for allergies by injecting small amounts of the substance into the body, until it builds up an immunity. I don't know if this works for food allergies. In any case, a medical doctor specializing in allergies would be able to give the safest advice. Good luck."

Ann replied: "Sorry to break it to ya but there are no cures for allergies. Quit eating those egg whites before you go into an anaphylactic shock."

Tkenya J replied: "no"

Chirag replied: "consult a doctor, since it differs from person to person u cant generalize it"

ckgopi replied: "allergies can not be cured they can only be controlled. If you are allergic to egg it is better you stay away from it."

Does anybody know of an allergy to omega 3 eggs causing a stomach ache? I have recently been buying the omega 3 eggs in the stores, but about 1/2 hour after I eat them, my stomach is in knots (this doesn't happen with regular eggs). I have been looking around for some information, but everything I can find is saying that omega 3 enriched foods should actually help relieve stomach aches. Are there any known allergies or side effects with omega 3 eggs such as described?

Bromeliad replied: "I'm not sure if the Omega 3 fatty acid in you eggs is coming from fish oil or flax--but if you have a sensitivity to fish oil or fish products, that might be the difficulty. Have you changed butter or margerine? How are you cooking the eggs? Frying in bacon grease which is very rich, poaching or scrambled? Something is causing your gut to respond in a negative way. Consider going back to the eggs that didn't bother you and get your Omega 3 fatty acids in another way."

Do I have an egg allergy? 20 minutes or so after I eat eggs, I start to feel really hot and I start to sweat... I have no idea why!!! Normally, I'm always cold... but this morning, I made myself breakfast, then I laid down to read, fell asleep and woke up cause I was all sweaty and hot... :( I love eggs!

island girl!! replied: "I can't really say, but I advise you go visit a doctor"

Betsy replied: "Allergies can affect any system in your body in any fashion. You would be better off seeing a GP or allergist to be tested just in case. Your reactions WILL become worse if thats what it is. Just FYI, they do NOT always starta s a child, they can begin or end ANYtime in your life. Good luck with it!"

egg allergy as an adult?..please read? my husband is 37 and about three years ago he started getting sick everytime he eats eggs, he doesnt have any swelling, he just gets sick, is this caused by the yolk, whites or the while egg, thanks

kalpon777 replied: "Hey! It sounds like it's possible your husband has a food intolerance to eggs. What you can try to do is have him try just a super small amount, just a bite or two. If he doesn't get sick then it means he has a food intolerance, but if he gets sick after only 2 bites then it means he does have a food allergy. That also means he'll want to stay away from eggs because you don't want to go into anaphylactic shock! Also, many people experience food allergy and intolerance from both the yolk and the whites. If one or the other makes him sick, it is likely that the other one will not make him sick, so it's important to try BOTH SEPERATELY if he wants to find eggs edible again. Best of luck"

clock replied: "There are many reasons for throwing up food. Please consider the following. 1. Aversion to foods (eggs/prawns/fish/etc). 2. Chemicals used for frying foods (Cooking oils, lards, beef drippings) 3. Upset stomach. 4. Allergy to the food, the cooking materials or other constituents of the food. 5. Migraine headaches. It does not look like your husband has any of these. To me it does not seem he is allergic to eggs either. I say this because the common signs and symptoms of an allergy are: a: Rash on body. b. General itchiness. c. Wheezing and difficulty in breathing. d. Elevated heart rate e. Elevated respiratory rate. Conclusion: In my view your husband has a food intolerence. intolerance"

pennypincher replied: "I am intolerant to eggs also and poultry too. It is probably the whole egg. Use egg replacer for baking. It is made by Ener-G and is found at some grocery and most health food stores."

what cause egg allergies? is it the yelllow part of the white part? or ist both?

jmh2605 replied: "its just eating the eggs"

Elizabeth L replied: "The body's immune system is reacting to the proteins in the eggs. An allergy is basically an overreaction of the immune system to a harmless substance. The body-for some reason- thinks that the substance is harmful, and the immune system kicks in to fight it off. I don't think that there is any "safe part" of the egg if you have an egg allergy."

jenny replied: "The same thing that causes any other allergy - just like the other has explained - overreaction of the immune system. Some people are only allergic to the yolk, some to the whole egg. My daughter was VERY allergic to eggs, even touching some (a bun was baked and lightly spread with egg, to make it brown) made her face puff out. It was scary for a while. But we held through and avoided it completely for a few years. After 3 years she could eat some baked into a cake, and 2 years later she could eat them normally again. Now she is fine. Take care."

is egg good for 11 mths baby? i want to know whether i can start giving egg 2 my 11mth old girl,i have heard that egg causes allergies i want 2 know what kind of allergies i mean how i will know that it suits my baby or not and how much times a week should i give her?

Elizabeth E replied: "Wait till she is a year old. That is what I was told with my girls and that is what I did. Try a little a first and if everything seems fine then she should be okay."

dukechp replied: "It is fine to give her eggs, and I have never heard of anyone getting allergies from it. Don't let this go to your head Be carful though!"

sheena b replied: "you dont want to give them everything just yet because they might be allergic so try a little and if everthing is fine then it's alright."

hellokitty_19_2002 replied: "yah its good for ther baby i have a daugher and she loves eggs espicaly scrambled so all babys are different i would try her on just a lil just incase she may be allergic but if not go for it!!!"

Michele V replied: "I'd scramble and egg and try a give her a little of it....has show shown to have any food allergies????? if she has i'd wait and talk to your dr. But if she has done fine with all food i'd try a little every so often, if you haven't seen any bad reactions i'd say she is ok with eggs."

JESSICA H replied: "i was told a year also, but if she is eleven months I can't imagine that something majical is going to happen in the next couple of weeks, i would give her a little and see if she gets any kind of rash on her torso. diaper rash could also be a sign of eggs not agreeing with her. I think the big one to worry about was honey because there is some sort of bacteria in it"

pinkypink_3 replied: "I started giving my son egg when he turned 7 mo. I only give him egg about 0nce every other week.. It is actually just something I give him to change it up a bit.. He is not allergic to it. My nephew on the other hand was...When he ate egg, he br7oke out in rashes and started weezing.. He is still allergic to it. The only way to know is to try it... I don't recommend you giving it to him everyday... at least not untill he gets alittle older... My opinion"

Mr. I Dont Know replied: "Sorry, I dont understand the question."

ihave5katz replied: "Our daughter starting eating scrambled eggs, mashed taters, and such about that time. Try one small bite with her, and nothing else she hasn't already had, and wait about a half an hour and if there is no reaction, she's okay with egg. Food allergies generally come on within a half an hour. If she does have a reaction to the eggs, she could (any or all of the following) rash, vomit, fever, trouble breathing, red face, face swelling... any of the regular allergy reactions. A rash is no big deal, give her some Benedryl and no more egg. Any other symptom, she needs to see the ER to stop the reaction. Food allergies can kill (anaphylactic shock) just like any other allergy. It's a good idea to give a bite of the new suspect foods (strawberries, peanuts, etc.) and wait for the results."

kat replied: "when i took my daughter in for her 6 month checkup....my doctor told me that i should be starting her on table foods, including giving her eggs. (personally i dont agree with my doctor and think 6 months is too young to be on table foods)"

Shana replied: "Cooked egg yolk is fine now. You can add egg white as well at a year old. My 11 month old LOVES egg yolk."

Jennifer P replied: "eggs are not suppose to be given to a baby until they are exactly 1 they carry a type of bacteria that can really harm a baby"

christian.renee replied: "try the eggs POACHED. diluted with water. and very little at first. i would only try it 1 or 2 days out of the week. i started all of my babies on table food rather early. (they were BIG babies) never had any allergies, thank God. however, as always, ask your pediatrician. that is truly what is best for baby!"

toogood4uin02 replied: "If you think she is ready for a soft-solid food like that then you can give it to her. My son just turned 8 months and he eats eggs. Not every day but once in a while. And he's fine."

suepetonquot replied: "all you can do is try it and watch her good luck"

darlene100568 replied: "Eggs does not cause allergies. It just reconmenned that a infant under 1 does not eat eggs because if the infant has a allergy to eggs then at such a young age it will be a serious reaction on the infant.I did feed my babies eggs before the age of 1.If you think about it alot of the baby food is made of egg product like baby chicken noodle soup.Noodles are made with eggs."

Brandi D replied: "ok your not suppose to give eggs until a year but you do want to try them out b4 they get their 12m shot because its an egg based shot so would rather know they were allergic better you inject it into their blood stream right????"

traea_1 replied: "The best suggestion is talk to your daughters Dr. there is a reason that theses folks spend nearly all of there early adult life going through college. They are the best to ask if you have a question. But the general rule of thumb is 1 year of age, I say better to be safe than sorry."

Rachel A replied: "not until she is a year old. it can cause food allergies if given sooner."

I EC replied: "You can give egg after about 9 or 10 months, but ONLY egg yolk. Egg white can cause allergies later on. I'd avoid egg white for several months after the first birthday just to be sure."

Amy L replied: "i thought it was fine, my daughter loves it. hard boiled is her favorite."

When is it OKAY to feed your toddler eggs with the egg whites? I know you should aviod the egg whites, becaus ethey can cause allergies, but when (what age) can you saftley inroduce the whole egg?

erinjl123456 replied: "Its okay around 2 years. They say by then most high allergie risks are gone."

Mom of Zach, Payton, & Chance replied: "My 3 yr old son has been eating egg whites since he was about a year old. He loves boiled eggs, but not the yolks, just the whites. The whites are better than the yolks for cholesterol reasons. Many places say not to give a child under 1 year of age egg whites. I know our nutritionist says to give my almost 2 year old eggs for protein so they can't be that bad for him lol."

arabella_noelle replied: "My daughter (now 2 1/2) has been eating them since she was about 9 or 10 months old. She had 2 older siblings who had them at that age as well. There was no high risk of allergies. I'd suggest talking to her pediatrician about it."

SunnyOne replied: "My daughter has her 1 year checkup in Jan. My Dr. told me to introduce egg whites 2 weeks prior to this appt and to see how it goes. His decision to introduce earlier than some may be the fact that my daughter has had no reactions to anything so far? Talk with your Dr. and see how they approach the issue."

Tracy.W replied: "I gave my son eggs around 9 months my pediatrician said it was just fine to start him on eggs 2 years dosen't seem correct but always ask the pediatrician I always gave him scrambled easy to pick up and soft to chew goodluck."

hanevkidz2 replied: "My kids were both about 1 when I started feeding them things such as eggs and such. I fed them the whole egg and there wasn't any problems. Doctor's will say at least with honey and things like that, to wait until they are 1 year old to feed it to them just in case they do have food allergies. My son is almost 3 now and hasn't had any problems with food allergies except for whole milk when he turned one. The best way to find out is to try it on them. A lot of times kids won't like the texture or taste of foods such as eggs at the young age of 1 anyway. So, I wouldn't worry to much about it. At least this is what I have found out with my 2 kids anyway."

Whast Causes Egg/Sulfur/Hydrogen Sulfide Burps? I posted this in the wrong place, I just figured out what I'm doing, sorry. So here is is again. There are several of us that are inflicted with the dreaded Sulfur Burps, we have gotten together here at yahoo to try to find an answer, the Dr's think we are crazy and tell us it will go away, don't worry about it, never heard it. It is a very real debilitating chronic problem for many of us. I have done a lot of research but since I know nothing much about Chemistry and the reaction of chemicals, I'm here, I'm everywhere trying to find a solution. I know that sulfur is blamed for the smell, the smell of rotten eggs. I know that the odor associated with rotten eggs is actually due to hydrogen sulfide. I know that some metal sulfides, when exposed to a strong mineral acid, including gastric acids, will release toxic hydrogen sulfide. How does this happen? What would cause such a reaction? When I learned this I said, Aha.. gastric acids and metal sulfides have something to do with this, so now what is a metal sulfide? What is the correlation between Gastric Acid and Metal Sulfide? Now, I just read something about foods that have the additive sulfur dioxide. I know that there must be a chemical reaction going on in the stomach causing the burping smell of rotten eggs/sulfur. People have had all sorts of tests done with no results, tried all kinds of meds with no results. It's like the food in sitting in the stomach and rotting causing Hydrogen Sulfide to build to the point it explodes and that's how you feel, like you are just going to explode. There is a lot of speculation about it being caused by a parasite, a virus, an allergy. And I think it is a chemical reaction to things that maybe we are sensitive to. So it would be an allergy to the chemicals in certain food. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.. Thank you for sharing..join here Your answer sounds to be on the right track. It started when I had my gall Bladder removed then went on the Adkins Diet. High protien low carbs and others have said this is when it started also. A lot of people think it is solely caused by Giardiasis, could that be the original cause? I read that once you get it, it can last for a long time then dies in your stomach causing a problem. Why can we eat the same foods all the time and maybe get it and maybe not get it. Even Soda Pop cause's it. But when ever I cut carbs out I am sure to get it? How can this link to Giardiasis as maybe being the problem? Does it have anything to even do with Giardiasis? I need to add that when the burps happen, it is reported that throwing up helps and that you may throw things up that were eaten days ago, like a peice of a vegetable. Do sulfites have anything to do with it? Foods that have sulfite additives? Or just high protien foods?

Huge replied: "I get this problem and it is due to excess acid and a slow and irritable gut . I reduce the symptoms by making sure that I fully empty my gut at least every other day ( if no motion is forthcoming naturally I use a laxative). I also changed my diet to: Drink plenty of water Not eating very fatty foods. Not eating wind/gas generating vegetables Avoid very acidic foods Never eat more than one egg a day Only eat low fat dairy products Not drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. It may sound excessive but it helps. I would like to join your group to chat more about these problems."

cuban friend replied: "The most frequent reports of this that I have seen in my practice occur when a heavy protein meal is ingested on top of a drug or act that causes your stomach not to empty as fast as usual. The problem, known as Gastroparesis, results from delayed emptying of the stomach and can be associated with various diseases such as diabetes, Crohn's disease, and damage to the gastric nerves. Recent abdominal surgery can cause this as well, but the effects are usually temporary. If you eat a high meat diet and you are suffering from this, then the meats will tend to sit in you stomach longer than usual and the bacteria that have broken the protein down somewhat as well as the acid in your stomach breaking protein bonds tend to cause hydrogen sulfide gas as a byproduct. This mixes with the CO2 in the stomach gases and is released as sulfide-burps. A number of medicines also have this effect including Narcotics which slow down the GI tract and sedative/hypnotics which also slow the GI tract. Decreased consumption of water with high protein intake can also cause it in some exercise freaks who become dehydrated. I suggest that you consider if any of the above factors apply to your situation and either adjust accordingly, or if they don't apply have a physician or gastroenterologist evaluate you for one of the known causes of gastroparesis Edit, Giardia causes diarrhea usually which is increased gastoenteric motility, but you seem to be suffering from gastroparesis which is decreased gastric motility, so Giardia is probably not the cause. Sulfites probably have no effect on it except to give you extra ammunition so to speak! MCC"

pennypincher replied: "I used to get those too. Then, I would get severe diarrhea. The burps always came before the diarrhea. I kept a food diary and discovered that certain foods trigger it. For me, the problem foods are: chicken, turkey, eggs, beets, cherries, and honey. I have to read labels to be certain to avoid some of these foods. The burps usually start 8-12 hours after eating the food. Keep a food diary, and see if you can find out what triggers it for you."
